Fear Is Not Of The Lord

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦: 𝐏𝐬𝐚 𝟑𝟑 “𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝, 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐮𝐬, 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮.”

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐: 𝟏 𝐏𝐭 𝟐:𝟒-𝟗

𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋: 𝐉𝐍 𝟏𝟒:𝟏-𝟔

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞: “… 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” (𝐯.𝟐) 

            In today’s Gospel reading we could feel the highly-charged atmosphere as the thought of the betrayal of Jesus and his impending arrest began to sink in among his disciples, the room where they settled for the Passover Feast was filled with fear. And who wouldn’t feel anxious about the events that are about to unfold which Jesus himself bared.

            If the religious authorities at that time could order the arrest of Jesus who claimed he was from God and who was sent by God to save the world, certainly his disciples knew that it would be less difficult for the Sanhedrin to round them up and subject them to the same fate as those accused of rebellion.

            His disciples believed everything that Jesus said. They also witnessed the many instances of miracles such as the water that turned into wine, the multiplication of the five loaves and two fish, the blind from birth who was able to see, the lame at the pool of Bethesda who was able to walk, the daughter of the synagogue official who was brought back to life, and Lazarus whom Jesus raised back to life and they all believed and followed him because they saw God in him. They knew that no harm would come to them for as long as they were with him.

            But supposing he will indeed be arrested as he says and tried for blasphemy and rebellion for which the penalty is death, what will the future hold for them. Will they also be arrested? What will now happen to the eternal kingdom that Jesus foretold and which they believed. There was nothing that his disciples could ever think of at that moment except fear and anxiety.

            This was the reason why Jesus had to reassure his disciples: “𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐝; 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞.” (𝐯.𝟏) Because he also knew that his disciples are at a loss as to where they will go without him, Jesus had to restore their confidence by saying: “𝐈𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬; 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐨, 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” (𝐯.𝟐)       

As if this was not enough, made it clear to them that: “𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐈 𝐠𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐈 𝐚𝐦.” (𝐯.𝟑)

            Like the disciples there have been times when we too felt fearful of many things. And the most common was being afraid of the dark when we were still kids and our mothers would encourage us by saying “Do not be afraid, Jesus will protect you. All you need to do is pray and Jesus will send his angels to cover you.” And in our young minds we believed that. Our fears are like that of the disciples because they are afraid of facing the world without Jesus. 

            And Jesus did what our mothers did as he reassured his disciples: “𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝” (𝐯.𝟏𝐚). To further build the confidence of his disciples, Jesus told them: “𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐝, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞” (𝐯.𝟏𝐛). In some other bible versions, the word used was “believe” instead of trust. There was no doubt that the Jews at that time believed in God.

Even the Scribes and Pharisees believed in God. What they couldn’t believe was the assertion of Jesus to place himself in the same level as God: “𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞.” (𝐉𝐧 𝟏𝟎:𝟑𝟎)       

And to further boost their confidence, Jesus told them that if God can work through him they it follows that God can also work through them as he told his disciples: “𝐈 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫,” (𝐯.𝟏𝟐)       

Today, we are in a better position than the disciples and the early Christians because it is easy for us to know who God is and who Jesus is with all the kinds of advanced communications medium that we now have. I went to a worship service one time, and I felt antiquated because those beside were reading through the Scriptures using their iPhones and iPads.

            But many of us are like Thomas who asked: “𝐬𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲?” (𝐯.𝟓) or Philip who told Jesus: “𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝, 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬.” (𝐯.𝟖).

Sometimes it’s hard to see God in the events of our everyday life. Climate change may have adversely created a dramatic change in our weather patterns that we are now experiencing severe weather disturbances even during summer and thousands have lost their lives and those who survived lost all their possessions.

Cases of corruption in the corridors of power, high crime rate, hedonism and relativism appear to have become the norm. So, the question is where is God in all these. How else can I see God when my life and my environment are dotted with what is immoral.

            Indeed, it would be difficult for us to see the Father in all of these because it is probable that we have not seen Jesus himself. It is easy to say we have faith but to believe in him is another thing if we are to digest what the word believe means.

The root word of believe comes from the German word “liebe” which means love. Thus, to believe in Jesus is to love him which is why we can only see Jesus if we love him and by loving him we also acknowledge him to be our Lord and Savior who is the source of everything that we have.

            What Jesus said to Philip is what he is also telling us now: “𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩,… 𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐲, ‘𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’? 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐈 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧. 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.” (𝐯𝐯.𝟗-𝟏𝟎)       

We are also hard-pressed in seeing God and Jesus in the circumstances of our lives because many of us regard Christianity and or our faith as a religion which is why there are many among us who are stuck with the head-knowledge about who God is. We must remember that when God sent his only begotten Son to become incarnate the great divide that separated the Divine God and humanity was removed. 

            Thus, what we now have is no longer just a religion but a relationship with God through Jesus. And the way to believing is not to argue about Jesus but to listen to what he is telling us in the Sacred Scriptures and to fix our eyes on him.

            That relationship must be founded on mutual love – the love of Jesus for us who though he was in the form of God did not deem equality with God as something to be grasped at but he humbled himself and became obedient to death on the cross and, our commitment to love him in all the circumstances of our lives.

            Today we are told that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Indeed, he is, and there is no other way except through him. Because he who created all things out of nothing said so himself, we are mandated to believe in him when he says: “𝐍𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐦𝐞.” (𝐉𝐧 𝟏𝟒:𝟔)

            This means that there is no other way except through him. We all want to go to heaven at life’s end. There is no other way but to go to Jesus, humble ourselves, believe and let him let him lead the way.

The whole person of Jesus reflects the truth of God’s Kingdom. He was sent down from heaven not only to testify to the truth but to reveal the truths of God’s encompassing love for mankind. “𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝, 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞.” – 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟏𝟖:𝟑𝟕 

In a world darkened by sin, Jesus came to lead us to take that leap of faith from darkness to a world that shines in marvelous light. “𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝, ‘𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.'” – 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟖:𝟏𝟐

And so, as we recite the Apostle’s Creed when we attend the celebration of the Holy Eucharist let us do so with the conviction in that we truly believe in what it says it is.

𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒅, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒍𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒚, 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉, 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆.                 

𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝑱𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝑩𝒆𝒈𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝑺𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒐𝒅, 𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒔. 𝑮𝒐𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑮𝒐𝒅, 𝑳𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑳𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒅, 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆, 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓; 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆.          

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔 𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑯𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑽𝒊𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒏.              

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒖𝒔 𝑷𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆, 𝑯𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒅 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒑𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔.          

𝑯𝒆 𝒂𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓. 𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒈𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒋𝒖𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒅𝒐𝒎 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒅.
